Hiring

Student research opportunities and guidance for prospective collaborators.

I welcome inquiries from students interested in explainable AI, continual learning, and AI for space weather. Advertised positions and their application instructions are listed below.

PhD students

There are currently no advertised openings for PhD students. For an independent project inquiry, please follow the guidance below.

Undergraduate researchers

There are currently no advertised openings for undergraduate researchers. For an independent project inquiry, please follow the guidance below.

Have a project in mind?

If no suitable position is advertised, you may still write to discuss a potential research collaboration. Please include:

  • A concise research proposal summary describing the project you would like to work on together: the research question, why it matters, your proposed approach, and how it connects to my research.
  • A detailed CV including your education, relevant coursework, technical skills, research or project experience, and publications or portfolio links, if available.
  • Your current degree level and availability, including when you hope to begin.

Use the subject line “HUMAN INQUIRY — PhD” or “HUMAN INQUIRY — Undergraduate.” An inquiry is an expression of interest; it does not imply that a funded position is available.

Email your proposal summary and CV

Your AI is not applying. You are.

A quick note before you reach out: I am interested in the person behind the application. Ideally, that person is also the one who wrote it.

If an AI has read my papers, developed a profound passion for my research, and emailed me on your behalf, congratulations to the AI. I still need to hear from you. Please write a specific, personal message that tells me what actually interests you.

Listing Python, deep learning, and twelve other skills on a CV is remarkably easy. Explaining what you built with them takes a little more preparation. Please list experience you actually have, describe your own contribution, and be ready to discuss it. A small, honest project tells me more than an impressive fictional one.

AI tools can be useful. Borrowed enthusiasm, invented experience, and answers you cannot explain are less useful ways to begin a research relationship. Bring your curiosity, your questions, and your actual skills. That is a much better starting point.
